A story of more than 1400 years, a complex and monumental structure, a very rich decoration and furnishings, a treasure of inestimable value and a dense web of international relations marked throughout its history, make the Cathedral of Monza one of the most important ecclesiastical institutions in Italy and Europe.
An importance to which the basilica seems to have been destined since its origins, which are located in the difficult years of the first organization of the Lombard kingdom in Italy and are linked to the figure of Queen Theodolinda (about 570 – 627), a Bavarian princess of Catholic faith, married, in succession, two kings of the Longobards: Autari (in 589-90) and Agilulfo (from 590 to 616).
