The Treasury also includes numerous ancient fabrics, which were long venerated as relics because they belonged to saints or because they had been “in contact” with other relics.
Among them are two fragments of Egyptian fabric from the 6th-7th century, originating from the garments of Pope Gregory the Great, and three corporals, small altar cloths of the same period and origin.
Next are the so-called Apostles’ Baskets, five small bags made from woven palm leaves and decorated with bands featuring geometric patterns, attributable to a typical Palestinian production documented from the Roman era to the 10th century.
The white mitre and the red mitre date back to the 12th century.
